Checking on the Vegetable Beds and Today's Harvest

I see gardening as a necessity, especially fruits and vegetables.  In this economy and world climate, it just makes sense!  Yes, I have a farm and egg share.  I'm supporting a local business, and making sure I have fresh produce coming in from both sides.

It also makes me happy.  To learn what works, what doesn't.  I'm doing more things now from seed.

I am a garden by the seat of my pants kind of girl.  Neat and orderly is not my style.  If I am not using a bed, I let the catmint take over.  Gives the pollinators some food.  I throw flower seeds everywhere (my husband is not a fan of this at all) I use whatever I have to grow flowers or veggies in.

Like peas in an old wash bucket, using an old wire topiary shape for them to climb up

Potatoes in huge planters that I slowly fill with soil.  I have 5 of these going, plus I planted the rest of the seed potatoes in a raised bed.

Broccoli Rabe (Rapini)

Broccoli

White Japanese Salad Turnips (I eat cooked or raw)

Just starting to peek out.  The greens are good to eat too!

Baby Kale on the left (I will thin out this week) and Lettuce, Oregano and Chives on the right

Perpetual Spinach on the left, Fennel on the Right (frilly leaves)

Today's harvest.  I am averaging 4-6 stalks a day.  I see asparagus as a side later in the week.

Are you gardening?  What are you planting, and where in the world are you doing it?

  1. I love your style. I should be gardening. The year I did grow in pots on the porch, critters enjoyed the squash! I will buy seeds just in case I must force myself to plant something, anything. Reviving my dehydrating habit is my attempt at storing fresh food. Pictures are inspirational.
